2024 marks the 26th year of the Philippine Eagle Week where we pay tribute to a national symbol, a true icon of Philippine biodiversity. With its estimated population at 392 pairs in the archipelago, the alarming rate at which this bird is retrieved or rescued counts shooting and hunting as its common denominator. The wanton use of airguns has been identified as the culprit in most rescue operations done on injured Philippine eagles.
To thwart aggressive actions due to misconceptions about these raptors, the DENR is steadfast in championing the cause to save these birds from further declining populations, let alone extinction. The Philippine eagle’s continuing saga is a story of hope. That the Philippine eagle is critically endangered tells us how frail and fragile our environment has become. But the continued survival of this species, thanks to heightened conservation consciousness and efforts, also tells us that there is hope not only for this eagle, but also for the rest of our biodiversity.
With this year’s theme, “Takbo ng Pag-asa: Para sa Kagubatan at Agila”the 26th PEW will kick-off with a marathon to be held in Baler, Aurora. The marathon is more than just a race, it’s a platform where the community unites to support the noble cause of saving the eagles thereby fostering a vibrant and festive ambiance that transcends all cultural boundaries, while drawing people’s attention on the urgent need to protect the Philippine eagles. The scenic route for the fun run featuring the stunning Baler Bay adds an extra layer of excitement to this event. The event not only promotes a healthy and active lifestyle but also serves a higher purpose by raising awareness. We encourage everyone to join in this incredible journey of compassion and resilience, as we run for a cause that truly matters. Together, let’s make every stride count as we pave the way towards a brighter future for these birds.
Adding yet further excitement to the PEW is the local Baler art scene which will also be highlighted with an art workshop for kids ages 6-15 and 16-21. Lending their expertise to these art workshops are local Baler artists who shall impart the basics of Painting 101 to participants. A film showing will be shown to the public for free. Likewise, a tree planting activity at the Dibalo- Zabali Pingit Malayat Watershed Forest Reserve, a Protected Area where native trees and agroforestry species will be planted shall comprise part of restoration activities for the bird’s habitat. Finally, a concert that will highlight performances by Baler bands and artists plus a Manila-based duo Harmony and Horizon, will lend its talent to this year’s celebration.
As we celebrate the 2024 PEW we take pride of our collective efforts for the continued conservation of these birds, to save them from extinction and that we are able to foster a culture that inspires, empowers and sustains a sense of purpose.
